EC chief Thapaliya urges media for self-regulation, self-assessment

Kathmandu, Sept.30: Chief election commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya has urged the mass media for making self-regulation and self-assessment with regard to the publication and broadcasting of news during the election.

In a press meeting held during the inauguration of the Press Office at the Commission’s headquarters in Kantipath for the election of the House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly, the EC chief made it clear that the Election Commission (EC) will not regulate news items published or broadcast as the responsibility lies with the Press Council.

He said, “Press Council will monitor the compliance of news produced, broadcasted and will monitor whether or not the news materials are helping the upcoming election or not.”

He expressed confidence that news media will self-evaluate and self-regulate their news publication and broadcasting.

Highlighting the pressing role played by the media houses in making the local election successful, he said that digital and social networks will be monitored as well.

The EC has appointed one spokesperson and three joint spokespersons for a faster and more effective flow of information. Press Office which consists of 27 members of experts has come into operation from today, Friday.

The press office has been set up for giving integrated information through one door policy during elections.
