Kathmandu, Aug 18: The Supreme Court has ordered the government to move forward with investigations into the 2007 Gaur massacre in which senior political figures such as Janata Samajbadi Party chair Upendra Yadav are accused.
A division bench of Justices Til Prasad Shrestha and Nityananda Pandey issuing a mandamus on Monday, directed that investigations into those named in the complaint related to the killings must proceed.
On March 21, 2007, clashes broke out between the then Madheshi Janadhikar Forum, led by Yadav, and the then CPN (Maoist) at the Rice Mill ground in Gaur, Rautahat.
The violent confrontation left 27 Maoist supporters dead and more than a hundred others injured. Families of the victims were later provided compensation of Rs1 million each, but justice has remained elusive.
Over 113 individuals, including Yadav, former lawmaker Baban Singh and ex-provincial assembly member Babulal Sah, have been linked to the case.
Victims’ families and rights groups have long demanded accountability, saying state agencies failed to act despite repeated recommendations.
