Kathmandu, Nov 3: Seven people were killed, four injured, and four others went missing after an avalanche struck at the base camp of Yalung Ri peak (5,630 metre) in the Rolwaling Valley of Dolakha district on Monday morning.
Among the deceased are three US citizens, one Canadian, one Italian, and two Nepali nationals, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police Gyan Kumar Mahato of the District Police Office, Dolakha.
He said the avalanche occurred as the team of Nepali and foreign climbers, along with local guides, were at Yalung Ri base camp as part of their preparation to ascend the higher peak the Dolma Khang (6,332 metre).
Rescue operations are ongoing, but officials said the rescue operations were halted after evening. Earlier, the rescue efforts were delayed due to flight restrictions in the Rolwaling region, which require special administrative clearance for helicopter movements. Even after securing permission, adverse weather caused further delay.
