NCP panel submits report, suggests not to accept MCC in current state

KATHMANDU, Feb 21: Taskforce formed to study on a grant scheme by the US Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Friday submitted its report to the chairperson duo KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

Sources said that the team suggested that the government should accept the MCC grant only after amending some of its provisions.
It has carried out extensive study on the MCC

The meeting of the panel held earlier today finalized its report including some suggestions, according to a member Bhim Rawal. “We conducted an in-depth study over the various facts regarding the agreement between the Government of Nepal and MCC along with Indo Pacific Strategy,” informed Rawal.

Following a heated debate over MCC grant within the ruling NCP, the meeting of the central working committee had formed a task force to conduct a detailed study and submit the report within 10 days. However, upon its failure to accomplish the task within the stipulated time frame, the deadline was extended to an additional 10 days.

According to Rawal, more than a dozen other agreements are to be studied thoroughly including MCC.

The committee formed on February 2 is led by former prime minister Jhalanath Khanal and includes senior party leaders Pradeep Gyawali and Bhim Rawal as members. The committee was formed after most of the central committee members stood against the US grant meant for a cross-border electricity transmission line and road projects.
