The deputy federal chairman of the Kurdish community in Germany, Mehmet Tanriverdi, called for people with a migration background to feel safe in Germany. Five of the victims have Kurdish roots and are German nationals. “Right-wing extremism and racism is a disease,” he said.

“We shouldn’t be afraid”
“In German society 20 percent of the voters support such tendencies, they have prejudices (against migrants or Muslims). Something like this can happen anywhere,” said Tanriverdi. “We shouldn’t be afraid. We should speak up, take to the streets and show colors, with the majority of our fellow citizens.”

According to the Turkish embassy in Berlin, five Turkish citizens are among the dead. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed condolences to the families of the victims and said: “I believe that the German authorities will make every effort to illuminate the attack in all aspects.”

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ankara condemned the Hanau deed as a “malicious attack “. The ministry said it was a “new and serious impact of growing racism and Islamophobia”. It was time to stop such attacks.

According to SPIEGEL information, the victims of the initial investigation by the public prosecutor’s office included nationals of the following nationalities: Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, Germany / Afghanistan (dual citizenship) and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
