Deuba, Oli meeting ends on a ‘positive note’, agree to continue dialogue

KATHMANDU, Feb 24: The meeting between the top leaders of ruling Nepali Congress (NC) and the main opposition party, CPN-UML, held on Thursday evening ended on a ‘positive note’, leaders said.

The meeting held between Prime Minister and Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba and UML Chairman K P Oli mainly dwelt on lifting the obstruction in parliament and ratify the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) grant agreement through parliament, according to Minister for Information and Communication Technology Gyanendra Bahadur Karki.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Deuba had sought UML’s support to ratify the MCC grant agreement. However, the UML Chairman Oli had repeated that they are not in position to take part in the parliamentary process until their demands are addressed.

The two sides, however, have agreed to continue with their dialogue to forge consensus on the issues. Sources claimed the meeting has ended on a positive note with agreement to sit again for talk next day.

The UML has been protesting against Speaker Agni Sapkota in parliament for not taking action against 14 lawmakers the party had sacked earlier. Parliament has failed to function properly due to the UML’s obstruction.

During the meeting held between two sides earlier on the day, Deuba had expressed his readiness to introduce an impeachment motion against Speaker Agni Sapkota in case the UML comes onboard the government, according to NC sources. The UML will then be part of all seven province governments, while Deuba will lead the federal government, the sources added, elaborating on a possible deal between the NC and the UML.
