Clashes erupt in Damak over cable car project as protesters and police face off

Clashes broke out between protesters and police in Damak, Jhapa, on Sunday during a demonstration against the proposed cable car project in Pathibhara of Taplejung district. The two-day strike called by the Mukkumlung conservation struggle committee led to violent confrontations between the demonstrators and the police. The committee has enforced general strike in nine districts of Arun east on Sunday and Monday.

According to eyewitnesses, the situation escalated when protesters began hurling stones at the police that prompted the security personnel to respond with tear gas. Police fired two rounds into the air to disperse the crowd, while one round of tear gas was used to control the situation after protesters became increasingly aggressive.

Superintendent of Police Milan KC confirmed the use of tear gas and claimed that the action was taken after protesters attacked police with rocks. Four protesters were detained during the incident, and no serious injuries were reported.

The protest, which was part of a broader movement against the construction of the cable car project in the Mukmulung area, has been gaining momentum. The protesters claim that the project will harm the local environment and disrupt the lives of the locals.

The Mukmulung struggle committee and the cable car project cancellation struggle committee have announced further protests if the project is given continuity. The Pathibhara Mata Cable Car Company began land levelling for the project earlier this week, sparking outrage among local activists.

The protesters have vowed to escalate their actions if their demands are not met, warning of further strikes and demonstrations.
