Kathmandu, May 8: Nepal Police said on Thursday that 80,461 people entered the Kathmandu Valley in the last 14 days of the lockdown – April 23 to May 6.
The extended lockdown period is expiring Thursday midnight while the Cabinet had extended it till May 18.
Of the total people entering the valley, 79,700 came on vehicles and 761 on foot, according to the Nepal Police Headquarters.
Similarly, 177,864 people left the valley on vehicles and 17,799 on foot during the same period.
Deputy Inspector General and spokesperson of police Niraj Bahadur Shahi said that in the last 14 days, 30,090 vehicles entered the valley while 34,335 vehicles exited.
These vehicles include both carrying essential goods, including vegetables, ambulances, private and the government vehicles, which possessed the government issued permits.
Analysis of the statistics shows that in average, 5,700 people entered the capital every day.
According to Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Range, people were mainly using Thankot-based Naghdunga check post and Bhaktapur-based Jagati check post for their entry and exit.
Senior Superintendent of Police Shyam Lal Gyawali at the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Circle said that on May 6 alone, 4,268 people entered the valley from 1,719 vehicles through Naghdhunga, Pharping, Mudkhu, Jagati and Sankhu routes. On the same day, a man came to Kathmandu on foot while 4,506 people left the valley from 1,638 vehicles and five on foot, according to the police.
Police have their assumption that every day around 2,500 to 3,000 people in 1,500 vehicles were making their mobility within the valley.
Meanwhile, a ministry source deployed at the COVID-19 Crisis Management Centre (CCMC) in Chhauni of Nepali Army said the people in the valley were making unnecessary movements in their vehicle and such activities have posed a great risk of the coronavirus spread in the valley at any time.
According to the police, they had detained 3,340 people across the country in 24 hours of May 5 and 6 while 2,648 were arrested on May 3 and 4 for defying the lockdown. Record of these four days showed that lockdown violators are increasing in the country, said police.
Since the lockdown came into effect from March 24, police had detained 131,829 people and 59,303 vehicles from across the country. Of them, 103,005 people and 20,574 vehicles were set free from the Kathmandu Valley.
