Kathmandu, July 4: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli said on Saturday that the ruling Nepal Communist Party is facing a grave crisis while indicating that the party may split soon.
At an emergency meeting at his official residence in Baluwatar, the prime minister, however, told the Cabinet ministers that he will do his best to keep the party unity intact until the last minute.
“Now, conspiracies are being hatched to remove me from the post of prime minister and party chairman. In addition to that, some of our party members are also trying to bring impeachment motion against President Bidya Devi Bhandari at parliament,” a Cabinet minister told quoting the prime minister as saying. Oli also said that he will not let it happen.
“I had to make a quick decision to prorogue the budget session of parliament after coming to know that some of our party members were hatching conspiracy to register an impeachment motion against President at parliament,” Oli told the ministers.
Oli said that he will not be forced to accept the party’s Standing Committee decision.
Oli’s statement comes at a time when the intra-party rift in the NCP at its peak after majority of the party’s Standing Committee members and Central Secretariat members demanded his immediate resignation from the posts of Prime Minister and party chairman accusing his government of failing to live up to the people’s expectations as promised during the elections and party unification.
The Standing Committee meeting which was supposed to be held on Saturday has been postponed for Monday due to growing mistrust between Oli and another chairperson of the party Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
Oli has accused another chairperson Dahal of non-cooperation in running the government while Dahal accused Oli of imposing his hegemony in the party.
Surya Thapa, the prime minister’s press aide, said that the prime minister invited the ministers to share the latest political developments of the country.
Prior to the meeting, Oli held a one-on-one meeting with President Bhandari at the latter’s office in Maharajgunj.
