CPN-UML formally splits, Nepal-led faction registering new party

KATHMANDU, August 18: The main opposition CPN-UML has now officially split, with the Madhav Kumar Nepal-led faction of the party deciding to register a new political party.

Earlier, on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, President Bidya Devi Bhandari issued the ‘party-split’ ordinance on Wednesday that paved the way for the Nepal-led faction to register a new political party of their own.

According to sources, leader Nepal has reached the Election Commission to register the new party named ‘CPN-UML Socialist’.

With the issuance of the ordinance, a political party can be split if 20 percent of members of either the Central Committee or Parliamentary Party are in favor of a split.
