Kathmandu, March 28: Several security personnel and protesters were injured in a clash at Tinkune during a protest calling for the restoration of the Hindu kingdom on Friday.
Human rights organisations said that both Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel, as well as protesters, sustained injuries.
Some of the injured are receiving treatment at Kantipur Hospital in Tinkune. The situation escalated when pro-monarchy protesters attempted to breach the designated security cordon, throwing stones at police. In response, security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Earlier, protesters vandalised a building and set it on fire in Tinkune. What was promised to be a peaceful rally turned violent as demonstrators smashed the windows of a building along the roadside.
Protesters also vandalised the central office of the CPN (Unified Socialist).
Tensions further escalated when protesters broke through the security perimeter, prompting a fierce response from police.
The protest was led by the Nawaraj Subedi-led joint movement committee, with controversial businessman Durga Prasai mobilising supporters. The Rajendra Lingden-led Rastriya Prajatantra Party also expressed support for the demonstration.
